Many of us believe that dogs have a special ability to sense kindness in people, often trusting their instincts about who’s good or bad. However, a recent scientific study challenges this common belief. Researchers observed how dogs reacted when they saw humans treating other dogs kindly or unkindly, expecting the dogs to prefer the kinder person. Surprisingly, the dogs did not show any preference toward the person who had acted more kindly, even after witnessing direct interactions. This suggests that dogs may not judge human character based on how we treat other dogs, or at least not in the way we expect. The findings highlight that dogs' assessments of reputation and kindness could be more complex or subtle than previously thought.
